Porcelain Veneers
When properly done, dental veneers can be very beautiful, and they can transform a less attractive smile into a thing of beauty. Veneers can be made out of a variety of materials, but in my opinion, some techniques and materials should be avoided for both mechanical and aesthetic reasons. Custom-made porcelain veneers in the hands of a precision-oriented dentist, and paired with a great dental lab, can create stunningly beautiful results that can last decades.
In the not-so-distant past, the appearances of high quality porcelain veneers could not be matched by other dental materials. With the advent of newer dental material combinations, like porcelain fused to zirconium, provides a stronger alternative to porcelain veneers. Veneers do have the advantage of needing less tooth reduction as compared to crowns, but some crown materials are many times stronger. Both techniques can provide beautiful results, so an evaluation of a patient’s specific desires and needs should be accounted for in making the best decision.
Typically, a porcelain veneer is a thin layer of custom-fabricated porcelain that is bonded to the front surface of an upper anterior tooth, or teeth. Most of the time you need to remove some of the front surface of the tooth to make room for the porcelain. If you don’t remove some tooth to make room for the porcelain, then the teeth will appear bulky and unnatural. When properly done, a porcelain veneer can last 20 to 30 years, but they will one day need to be replaced due to wear and tear. Some of the veneers I placed 20-plus years ago I am now replacing with porcelain fused to zirconium crowns because of the increased strength of this newer generation of crowns. Without a doubt, new materials will continue to evolve. At Colorado Precision Dentistry and Orthodontics we are always in search of the finest materials. When we know a new material or procedure surpasses current technology we integrate it into our services.
